In the heart of Kenya’s vibrant academic landscape lies not only a place that transformed my life as a student, spiritually and professionally, but also a call to embrace servant leadership. Daystar University, a beacon of knowledge, welcomed me into its nurturing embrace, igniting a profound journey of personal growth and self-discovery.

As I set foot on the lush campus grounds, I had little inkling of the transformative power that awaited me. Little did I know that Daystar University would become the crucible in which my character, purpose, and calling would be refined to shape me into the servant leader I am today.

Amidst its academic halls, I found a haven where faith and knowledge entwined harmoniously, fueling my passion for a life of service and leadership.

My testimony as a student at Daystar University is not just a story of academic excellence and accomplishments. It is a tale of metamorphosis, where Daystar sowed the seeds of my dreams, nurtured them and eventually blossomed into a compelling vision of impact and purpose. Daystar’s unwavering commitment to fostering holistic development has been evident in every facet of campus life, from vibrant classrooms to spirited chapel services.

My name is James Njoroge Mbui, and my life took a remarkable turn when I joined Daystar University in August 2019. Initially, I knew little about Daystar, but fate led me there through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), placing me in the Actuarial Science department. I knew that this journey would be filled with challenges, growth, and the discovery of knowledge but little did I know that it would fuel my passion for servant leadership.

From the very beginning, I found myself surrounded by supportive family at Daystar University. It became a nurturing environment where I not only pursued my academic dreams but also had the opportunity to develop my leadership skills. Through various leadership positions, I learned the true essence of planning, coordinating and collaborating with others.

One of my initial leadership roles was that of organizing secretary for Daystar University Actuarial Science Association (DUASA). This experience exposed me to organizing events like career fairs which enhanced my leadership skills further. As I continued to seek opportunities to serve, I became part of the Daystar Compassion and Care Centre (DCCC). Here, I delved deeper into peer counseling and other leadership skills. We organized health awareness weeks, mental health talks, and movie nights for the Daystar student fraternity.

Another milestone was my involvement in Daystar Christian Fellowship (DCF). Initially, I served in various service teams before stepping into the role of Mission, Discipleship, and Bible Study Coordinator. Finally, I had the honor of serving as the DCF chairperson. This role allowed me to oversee all 15 Serve teams, plan and organize chapels and Bible studies, and participate in High School Missions, amongst other responsibilities. DCF gave me a platform to grow into a more impactful leader.

Daystar University has instilled in me a sense of purpose, emphasizing the ethos of excellence, transformation and servant leadership. These principles became my compass, driving me to strive for excellence in all aspects of my life. But I didn’t want my growth to be limited to myself. I felt a deep desire to give back to the community that had embraced and nurtured me. As a result, I started an academic mentorship programme that gathered together willing university students to support children at the Pillars of Hope Children’s Home, located near Daystar University. We provided tuition support to these children and motivated them to pursue their dreams and aspirations.

In addition to the mentorship programme, I have been actively engaged in various outreach initiatives. One notable project is “the cost of a Pad,” which aimed at addressing menstrual hygiene challenges that girls grapple with in Kibera Slums, Nairobi. With the generous support from donors, we were able to donate reusable pads worth Ksh.150,000 to 100 girls in the slum. This initiative did not only address a critical need but also challenge the societal stigma surrounding menstrual hygiene. This was my commitment and firm belief in advocating for empowerment of young girls and gender equality.

As I reflect on my journey at Daystar University, I can’t help but feel grateful for the growth, opportunities, and transformation I’ve experienced. I’ve not only developed academically but also honed my leadership skills, learned the importance of servant leadership, and discovered the joy of giving back to the community. Daystar has shaped me into the person I am today – someone who is committed to excellence, compassion, and making a positive impact on the lives of others. My journey continues, and I am excited about the future, knowing that the seeds of wisdom and service planted at Daystar will bear fruit for a lifetime. Thank you, Daystar.
