First of all, let me start by congratulating you class of 2023! I also thank God for bringing you this far in your academic journey! You can surely say, ‘thus far the Lord has brought us’.
Your graduation theme awed me: Legacy of Light: Woven in purpose. This is because it brought important aspects of purpose. Legacy is often thought of as something that is left behind after someone has passed away. However, it is much more than that. Legacy can be defined as the impact that one’s actions, words, and choices have on the world and those around them. On the other hand, light has been a symbol of hope and positivity throughout history and in the Bible Jesus is the light of the world! Thus, your theme brings about an aspect of living a life full of purpose and light that outlives you.
In the context of legacy, light can be seen as a metaphor for the impact we leave behind. Just as light illuminates darkness and brings clarity, our legacy can shine light on the path for future generations. It can inspire and guide others towards a better future. By weaving a purposeful legacy, we are creating a beacon of light that will continue to shine long after we are gone.
And the only reason you do that is because you are God’s masterpiece. Yes, you! You are fearfully and wonderfully made by the Creator of the universe. This means that you have inherent value and worth, simply because you exist. Being God’s workmanship also means that you were created with purpose and intention. You have unique gifts, talents, and abilities that were given to you by God. He has a plan for your life and wants to use you to make a difference in the world. He wants you to leave a lasting mark on this planet: a legacy of light.
As God’s workmanship, we are created with a purpose. We are not accidents or mistakes, but intentionally crafted by our Creator. Being created in Christ Jesus means that we are part of His plan and His family. We are adopted into His kingdom and given all the rights and privileges of being His children (Ephesians 1:5).
Creating a purposeful legacy is not just about leaving behind material possessions or a financial inheritance. It’s about leaving behind a lasting impact on the world that reflects who you are, what you stand for, and what you value. A purposeful legacy is one that is woven with intention, passion, and a deep sense of meaning.
When we look at individuals who have left behind purposeful legacies, we see that they were driven by a clear sense of purpose. They knew what they wanted to achieve and why it was important to them. The greatest of them all is Jesus whose impact is still felt over 2000 years later. He then promises that we will do greater things than He did.
The 21st century is driven by individualism BUT for you to leave a legacy, you must be willing to look beyond you! I therefore call you to think beyond you and see multitudes impacted by your talents, gifts and abilities for the Glory of God. Go, build for generations, with God’s help. Once again, Congratulations!
