A warm welcome to the School of Human and Social Sciences (SHSS)

The School of Human and Social Sciences is comprised of three departments and one institute; namely,

1. Department of Community Development under which certificate, diploma, undergraduate and master’s in Community Development are offered. Other programmes in the school are undergraduate and master’s programs in Monitoring and Evaluation.

Training in the above areas of specialization is about influencing power structures to remove the barriers that prevent people from participating in the issues affecting them.

The graduates of this specialization work in humanitarian organizations, NGOs, and more importantly, in other related sectors in ending poverty, protecting the planet, and striving to ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

Graduates with Monitoring and Evaluation skills are well suited for NGOs, Global Organizations as well as Research institutions.

2. Department of Psychology and Counselling offers certificate and diploma in counselling, BA Psychology and Counselling, MA counselling Psychology, Master’s in Clinical Psychology and PhD in Clinical Psychology.

Graduates in these specializations can work in such sectors as Criminal Justice and Correctional centers,

Rehabilitation centers and hospitals, Counselling centers, schools, private practice, NGOs, Humanitarian organizations and Research centers.

3. The Institute of Child Development offers a Master of Arts Degree in Child Development. The course has three concentrations: Child Therapy, Family Studies, and Integrated Studies. Students in this programme are equipped to work with children and adolescents in all sectors including health, social services, and education among others. Our graduates are serving within local, national, and international charities/NGOs, pre- schools, primary and high schools, hospitals, churches and tertiary institutions, among others. The Institute also offers a certificate in Child protection, Child therapy and Child development. The programmes are flexible in the mode and space of delivery.

 

Developments in the School

The School of Human and Social Sciences has continued to make great strides in providing quality, market-driven programmes over the years. Currently, the school is in advanced stages of rolling out three PhD programmes namely, PhD in Development Studies, PhD in Counselling Psychology and PhD in Child Development.

Towards contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals and particularly addressing food security issue in the country, the school has introducing a certificate and diploma programme in Agriculture from January 2022.
